My name is Jake Bebbington, I'm 20 years old and I am currently studying Film and Television Production at South Essex University Center. I have been studying film since GCSE and during that time it became the reason why I wanted to pursue film professionally. Over the years I have been apart of numerous projects where I have served in various roles such as director, writer and cinematographer.
My skillset includes:
-Scriptwriting
-Camera Work
This short film was my final project for my second year of college which was written, directed and edited by me. The short film is about a private investigator who is looking into a case about a serial killer known as the dealer. For this project I really wanted to lean into the conventions usually seen in Noir films such as the protagonists narration and urban locations as well as trying to re create iconic Noir iconography such as light beaming through the blinds of the protagonists office.
This short film was made at the beginning of my second year of college and again was written, directed and edited by me. The film is about two thief's preparing to steal an unknown item. When the robbery goes south they try to escape only to realise that they left the keys to their escape car inside the car. The genre of the short film is a hybrid between crime and comedy which are two genres I've always wanted to create a project in.
In my first year of university I was the cinematographer for a film called "I Wish You Well". The film revolves around the character of Jack who receives a mysterious package from his ex girlfriend. As he tries to prove to his current girlfriend that she's the one for him he finds that there is a mysterious power behind everything. This was the first project I had worked on where I was tied to one specific role. Cinematography has been an area I've always been interested in and I was able to get used to everything the role entails during the production of the short film such as collaborating with the director and playing around with different lighting set ups.
This short film was my friends final project for the second year of college. The short film is titled The Script and follows a man coming home from a long shift at work to find his life slowly unravelling into chaos. Towards the end he comes across a mysterious man who seems to be controlling everything that has happened to the character up until this point. For this short film I was in charge of the camera work and the short film was filmed in one take. We took a lot of time planning the different movements and did a few rehearsal sessions before filming. It was a challenging process as filming this short film was unlike anything I had filmed before but the final result turned out well.
For this shoot we travelled to Purfleet and collaborated with the make-up and acting students to create these brief segments. After the filming process we had a chance to edit these clips by adding a green screen background which was provided for us by the make-up students. I also added some sound effects to make the piece seem more immersive as well as adding some other effects such as smoke. This was because when keying out the green screen some of the smoke that was recorded on the day was removed so I found another effect and put that over it.
Seminar Shoot
Three of my classmates and myself went up to London to help a chiropractic company film their seminars for potential clients. We filmed the seminars as well as captured behind the scenes footage and some of my classmates took some photos of the speakers.
